40 years on from its original release Yamaha have re-established one of the company’s most iconic lines of drums, and the most recorded drums in history with the return of the Recording Custom Series.

Widely regarded as the industry standard for all drummers, the all Birch design was instrumental in shaping the modern drum set as we know it today including shell construction, interchangeable hardware and high gloss lacquer finishing.

As with the original design in 1975, Yamaha have again collaborated with legendary drummer and longtime Yamaha Artist Steve Gadd to retain the greatest features of the previous Recording Custom kit while incorporating the latest innovations to produce an optimized sound. The result is a drum kit that delivers both the classic signature sound and benefits from the latest enhancements in drum technologies.

The Recording Custom Series drum sets include 100% birch shells, 30-degree bearing edges and newly designed weighted Single piece lug, and a unique combination of the classic Yamaha sound with the latest improvements in manufacturing.

Steve Gadd explained “For the past 3 years I have been meeting with the Research and Development guys at Yamaha with the aim of bringing the Recording Custom Series up to date. I told Yamaha what I thought throughout the process, the result is that everything is a step up. They still feel like the Recording Custom, when you take them out of the box they don’t feel new, they feel comfortable and I think that is good. I think the Bass Drum has a nice fat sound, the drums responds to different heads on it and my goal was to have a simple Snare Drum design that could respond to a wide range of tuning. I think we did a great job, the new Recording Custom sound great and I hope you like them.”

The Recording Custom series will be available from June!

Specs:

•    100% North American Birch Shells (6-ply)
•    Dark Brown Interior

For the first time in its history, Yamaha Recording Custom Series snare drums will be available in a variety of metal shells including Brass, Stainless Steel and Aluminum with sizes that compliment all performance styles.

To date, Yamaha’s metal snare drums have traditionally had the metal center bead on the interior of the drum. However, we have taken the step of crafting the center bead to the outside of the drum to produce a more open sound than our conventional drums, for crisp, articulate performance.

The heavy-duty Q-type strainer is robust whilst offering solid, stable and smooth operation, along with adjustment and snare replacement.

Besides the regular 20 strand wires installed on the 14” x 5.5” Steel snare drums we will include Steve Gadd’s signature 10-strand snare wires additionally for more sensitivity producing a more natural tone with greater dynamics.

Developed in collaboration with Manu Katché, the Junior Kit offers superior performance in a small diameter configuration that can be adjusted to a wide range of heights.

The evolutionary concept of a “low-height junior kit that drummers can use for real performance,” the Junior Kit is a flexible drum kit adjustable to a wide range of heights, allowing anyone from small children to adults the world over to enjoy playing quality drums. On the advice of Yamaha artist Manu Katché, the number of toms has been increased from one to two, in a two-up one-down configuration. This was motivated by a desire to enable drummers to correctly play scores that use two toms as standard. Intended for use in educational settings, where other small diameter kits cannot be used satisfactorily, the Junior Kit will meet the needs of any performance situation.

The Junior Kit offers the punch and power that is typical of birch kits. There is no undesirable spillover of sound, so adjacent drums do not interfere with each other. This distinctive birch sound allows each note you play to be clearly distinguished.

Manu Katché Junior Kit Features

•    100% Birch Shells
•     Configuration: 16“x15“ Bass Drum , 10“x 7“ Tom Tom, 12“x 7“ Tom Tom, 13“x12“ Floor Tom, 12“x5“ Snare Drum
•    Available in 3 lacquered finishes: Deep Violet, Cranberry Red and Raven Black.
•    Possibility to add components from Stage Custom Birch Series (for Cranberry and Raven Black finish)
