Michael Steinkühler
Biography
grew up near Bremen. He had his first trombone lessons with Prof. Joachim Mittelacher at Hamburg University of Music and Theatre before becoming a student of Prof. Ehrhard Wetz in 1996 at the Lübeck University of Music.
From 1998 to 1999 he studied at the Berlin University of the Arts under Prof. Mittelacher, 1999 to 2006 with Prof. Wetz at the Lübeck and Mannheim Universities of Music, where he completed his diploma and studies in soloist education.
From 2000 to 2002 he was a member of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, in the season 2002/03 he was a principal trombonist with the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz, followed by a six-year engagement as principal trombone of the Dresden Philharmonic under the principal conductor Marek Janowski and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos as well as conductor laureate Kurt Masur.
From 2009 to 2014 he was principal trombone of the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg under the General Music Director Simone Young. Since 2014, he has been involved in the same position with the NDR Philharmonic Radio Orchestra.
He participated in numerous concert tours throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America, in many CD recordings, television and radio productions.
As principal trombonist, he is a regular guest in various large symphony orchestras, e.g. the Bavarian State Orchestra Munich, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra Hamburg, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Bamberger Sinfoniker and various German radio symphony orchestras.
In addition to his orchestral appearances, he performs regularly as a soloist, devoting himself intensively to chamber music and historical performance practice. He played as a guest in the Ensemble German Brass, the Ludwig Güttler Brass Ensemble and regularly participates in the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble under the direction of Thomas Hengelbrock.
Michael Steinkühler has been teaching at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim since 2008, was teacher at the Orchestra Academy of the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg, teaches at the Danish-German Brass Academy and regularly gives masterclasses.
2018 he was appointed Yamaha Artist.
