In this traditional procedure, a fan-shaped piece of brass with a thickness of approximately 0.5 mm is slowly and carefully formed into a pipe, and its seam is welded shut. A skilled worker then hammers the pipe to form a bell shape. This one-piece bell used for high-end Custom and pro models trumpets.
In this step, a mandrel and the bell are spun while using a tool to conform the bell onto the mandrel and constrict the narrow end of the bell. This task is very difficult and labor intensive. Like hammering, bell spinning must be carefully performed by skilled workers.
To prevent the bell stem from losing its roundness when bent, a soft metal that melts easily is packed inside it. Next a form is used to bend the pipe into a U shape. Lastly the packed metal is melted and removed.
Finally the Yamaha logo is applied. The logo is applied precisely using a computer controlled engraver.
Machining and hole formation
In this step, holes are drilled in precise locations.
In this step, the valve casing parts are fitted into a special jig and passed through a furnace to braze the components together without any distortions.
In this step, a lathe is used to precisely machine the interior of the brazed valve casing. This step involves machine work and is critical for ensuring quick, smooth piston action.
The gap between the valve casing and the piston is set to 10 microns on one side. This is such a high level of precision that the valve will not work if even a single strand of hair becomes trapped in the gap.
* 10 microns (0.01 mm) is about one-tenth the thickness of a single strand of hair.
In this step, holes are bored precisely in six locations on each piston cylinder.
Tubes which serve as the passageways for three different air streams are fitted into the holes on the piston and brazed to it.
The outer diameter of the piston and smooth surface is ground and polished to form a precise seal.
Like soldering, brazing is a method of welding. It has a much higher melting point than soldering for superior strength.
A steel core rod with precise dimensions is inserted into the tube and fitted tightly against it as in the bell manufacturing process. The tube is then drawn through an exterior die forming highly precise, micron-level tolerances.

In this step, a steel ball, with a diameter the same as the inner diameter of the curved tube, is passed through to precisely shape the inner diameter of the pipe.
Assembling and finishing
Skilled workers carefully solder and assemble by hand parts such as the bell, valve casing, and leadpipe.
In this step, the surface of the body is polished using a buffer cloth and a polishing agent.
The instrument enters a mist of lacquer particles which are electrostatically applied to the trumpet to provide a strong, uniform coating.
Adjustments and playing test
Before a trumpet leaves the factory, it goes through a strict quality and playability test. This includes checking its intonation with a strobe tuner, and also using an air leak tester.
